Lectures are an essential component of this course and will be delivered 'live' at the timetabled times. Lectures will also be available as recordings, for students to re-watch later.  

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

The course is delivered via 1-hour lectures on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with a 1-hour (whole class) tutorial immediately after the Monday lectures.  

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

In the event of an unexpected disruption, we undertake to maintain the continuity and standard of teaching and learning in all your courses throughout the year. If there are unexpected disruptions the University has contingency plans to ensure that access to your course continues and course assessment continues to meet the principles of the University’s assessment policy. Late submissions will be considered on medical and special grounds when supported by a health or other professional, and when the application is made according to the following procedure. Requests for extensions of time must be submitted and approved before the due date unless there are exceptional circumstances. Students applying for an extension of time must obtain an Extension of Time Form for Coursework Submission from Canvas, complete the details and, if available, supply the supporting documentation from a health or other professional. Late submission forms must be supported by the course coordinator and then approved by the relevant programme director. Coursework not received by the due date, and for which no extension of time has been approved, will receive the grade ‘DNC’ (Did Not Complete).

The University of Auckland will not tolerate cheating, or assisting others to cheat, and views cheating in coursework as a serious academic offence. The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced. This requirement also applies to sources on the internet. A student's assessed work may be reviewed for potential plagiarism or other forms of academic misconduct, using computerised detection mechanisms.

In this course students may be asked to submit coursework assessments digitally. The University reserves the right to conduct scheduled tests and examinations for this course online or through the use of computers or other electronic devices. Where tests or examinations are conducted online remote invigilation arrangements may be used. In exceptional circumstances changes to elements of this course may be necessary at short notice. Students enrolled in this course will be informed of any such changes and the reasons for them, as soon as possible, through Canvas.

To pass this course, you need to: (i) achieve a final grade of C- or higher for the course (i.e. 50% or higher for the course); and (ii) achieve 35% or higher in the final examination (i.e. 35 out of 100 marks or higher in the final exam).  Note: at University, you can only submit any one assignment once (i.e. you are not given the opportunity to have a second attempt in order to try and get a higher grade).

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions. Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Student feedback shows that students enjoy learning about architects and buildings. They enjoy the in-person lectures, and the enthusiasm of staff for the subject matter.  In this course we have been experimenting with different types of tutorial delivery, including  a  weekly whole-class tutorial, small group tutorials, and online tutorials.   Feedback shows that the class has been divided on which is the best format. The whole-class format has the advantage of being able to use some of the sessions for site visits to local buildings.

Class representatives are students tasked with representing student issues to departments, faculties, and the wider university.
