Explores how businesses communicate with customers and other key stakeholders through digital advertising and social media campaigns. Evaluates the effectiveness of advertising, sales promotion, public relations, personal selling, and direct marketing, in a digital world.

Course Overview

The course introduces the fundamentals of building a successful brand strategy within the context of digital marketing, focusing on innovative, integrated, and data-driven approaches across multiple platforms. It enhances understanding of integrated marketing communications and builds expertise in strategic digital branding. Special emphasis is placed on digital brand storytelling within the Paid, Owned, Earned Framework, and on digital advertising as essential elements of a successful brand strategy.

It is advisable to first complete BUSMAN 720 Digital Marketing Strategy, as it lays a solid foundation in digital marketing fundamentals and offers hands-on experience with digital analytics and industry tools. Taking BUSMAN 722 without this background may be challenging, given that it builds upon the skills and knowledge acquired in BUSMAN 720. 

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15-point course. Students are expected to spend 12 hours per week on each 15-point course that they are enrolled in. This includes attending a 1-hour lecture, participating in a 2-hour tutorial, spending 3 hours on reading and reflecting on the content, and allocating 6 hours for working on assignments.

Campus Experience

Due to the applied practical nature of the course, attendance at all scheduled activities is expected. While lectures will be available as recordings, other learning activities, such as tutorials, will not be recorded due to their interactive workshop format, which emphasises hands-on activities designed for completion either individually or in teams. Attendance is mandatory for sessions with industry experts and for the presentations of the brand project. All course activities follow a standard weekly timetable. 
In the event of digital delivery, lectures will be pre-recorded to ensure uninterrupted content delivery. Students are expected to watch these lectures before attending class. Pre-recorded lectures for each week will be made available prior to the Zoom sessions, allowing students to view the material at their own pace and on their own time.

Learning Resources

Taught courses use a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas to provide students with learning materials including reading lists and lecture recordings (where available). Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Given the dynamic nature of digital marketing, this course does not require a textbook. Instead, it uses a blend of academic articles and resources from leading industry platforms, including Hubspot, Hootsuite, SEMRush, and Sprout Social.

The course actively collaborates with real organisations as clients, bringing authentic branding challenges directly into the classroom. Such an approach provides students with the opportunity to engage in practical problem-solving and gain invaluable hands-on experience.

Assessment and Learning Outcomes

Additional Information on Assessment

The assessments in BUSMAN722 contribute to a total of 100%. To pass this course, students must achieve a minimum overall score of 50%. Given that the brand project is a team-based assessment, peer evaluations will be applied to determine each team member's level of contribution.

Student Feedback

Feedback on taught courses is gathered from students at the end of each semester through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions. Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students. Additional Information on Student Feedback

In response to feedback from students who studied the course in 2022, several improvements are set to be implemented. Firstly, an industry certification relevant to digital advertising has been incorporated into the course assessments. Secondly, the inclusion of a portfolio aims to provide students with the opportunity to compile an industry-focused portfolio, enhancing their employability and readiness for the job market.
