Students must be wearing safety glasses, covered footwear and a lab coat before entering the laboratory and must keep these on until after exiting the laboratory. Jandals or other open shoes are not satisfactory footwear. Students who wear prescription spectacles are required to wear safety glasses over their spectacles. 

In the event of an unexpected disruption, we undertake to maintain the continuity and standard of teaching and learning in all your courses throughout the year. If there are unexpected disruptions the University has contingency plans to ensure that access to your course continues and course assessment continues to meet the principles of the University’s assessment policy. The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced. Students may be asked to submit assessments digitally. The University reserves the right to conduct scheduled tests and examinations online or through the use of computers or other electronic devices. Where tests or examinations are conducted online remote invigilation arrangements may be used. In exceptional circumstances changes to elements of this course may be necessary at short notice. Students enrolled in this course will be informed of any such changes and the reasons for them, as soon as possible, through Canvas.

A student must pass both the practical component and the other theory component to gain an overall pass. The practical component is composed of laboratory experiments and assignments. The theory component is composed of quizzes, tests, and final exams.

Regular, demonstrated engagement in the course will allow students to qualify for plussage; details on ways to demonstrate engagement are available on Canas. Plussage allows students to reweigh the one test of two tests/exam contribution of their final grade from 12.5:40 to 0:52.5 if their exam mark is higher than their test 1 or test 2 mark. Plussage may be applied to one test only - not both test 1 and test 2.

Attendance at laboratories is a compulsory part of this course. Wearing a laboratory coat, covered footwear, and suitable eye protection (e.g. safety glasses) is compulsory at all times when present in the laboratory. If a student does not wear adequate eye protection, appropriate footwear, or a laboratory coat at all times, the student will be asked to leave the laboratory and will receive a fail for that laboratory.

Feedback on taught courses is gathered from students at the end of each semester through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions. Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students. In addition, class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Students in previous semesters suggested that content be presented in a different order so that they can digest certain concepts well in advance of their examinations. The students enjoyed the structure and organization of the course overall. Therefore, we maintain our course structure but adjusted the Section themes to highlight some concepts from earlier on in the semester.
