COMMS 209 is focused on experiential learning both in the structure of the classes and the design of the assignments. Students use reflection on their own experiences in the workplace or other non-university organisations to create, develop and complete their own semester-long project.
While lectures will mainly focus on the skills needed to complete the various assignments (e.g., workplace writing, presentation skills, introduction to design thinking, video editing for beginners), the workshops will focus more specifically on the students and the projects they are working on.
The assignments making up the project include short reports, an ‘elevator pitch’, a job interview-styled reflection, as well as either a written or audio-visual final project submission. In doing so, student will develop new skills, new attitudes, or new ways of thinking while refining their skills in areas such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and teamwork.
