A professional skills course based on a communication-related team project in collaboration with an external organisation. Students will develop hands-on experience applying design thinking tools to real communications challenges. Along the way, they will hone their team skills, pitch an idea to an industry-based panel and learn how to craft a strong CV.

Course Overview

COMMS 308 is a professional skills course based on a communication-related team project in collaboration with an external organisation. Students will develop hands-on experience applying design thinking tools to a real comms-related challenge with an external organisation. Along the way you will hone your team skills, pitch an idea to an industry-based panel, learn how to craft a strong CV, and develop techniques to help you succeed at job interviews.

Workload Expectations

Students are required to attend 1 x 50 min lecture/week and 1 x 100 min workshop/week.

Students will need to spend about 5 hours in self-study/completing assessments and team meetings each week.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Comms 308 is an in-person course and requires attendance at weekly small group workshops as well as some all-student lecture sessions.

The workshops are hands on, and students will complete assessment and project work in these sessions.

The lectures will be information sessions with both external and internal guests.

Much of the Comms 308 course work involves practical project-focused work in teams.

Learning Resources

Taught courses use a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas to provide students with learning materials including reading lists and lecture recordings (where available). Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Comms 308 cannot be completed by distance. As there is significant teamwork, students will need to be comfortable working in a team. Team projects cannot be completed individually.

Student Feedback, Support and Charter

Student Feedback

Feedback on taught courses is gathered from students at the end of each semester through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions. Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students. In addition, class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Additional Information on Student Feedback

Comms 308 has been taught as CAREER 100 since 2019 and each year the teachers have taken on board student feedback from the SET evaluations as well as in-class focus sessions to improve the course. Based on the innovative, collaborative and communication focus of the course we have now upgraded to a final year project-focused comms course. As a special project course in 2026 we look forward to feedback on further refinements to make this a key final year comms course in 2027.

Special Circumstances

If your ability to complete assessed work is affected by illness or other personal circumstances outside of your control, contact a member of teaching staff as soon as possible before the assessment is due.
