Fundamental topics taught in statistical computing and data management including use of data analytic software such as Excel and R for data analysis, programming, graphics, cleaning and manipulating data, use of regular expressions, mark-up languages LaTeX, and R Markdown, use of SQL and DBMSs, reproducible research and symbolic computation. Students will undertake assigned individual research projects to be presented in-class.

Course Overview

DATASCI 779 aims to introduce software tools which are useful in data science and research. Many of these tools use a command line approach rather than a graphical user interface. The emphasis is on software which enhances productivity and improves the quality of  work. The skills are commonly used in the workplace, but also will be useful for producing academic work such as a dissertation or journal articles. The course is designed for students with basic knowledge of statistics and the R programming language which can be acquired through many routes such as completion of STATS 707 would be one option. Students without this knowledge prior to the course will need to attain it through extra study.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 150 hours over the course of the semester for each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

This averages to 10 hours a week including break and exam weeks. 

For this course, a typical workload during a teaching week includes:

  • 2 hours of lectures
  • 2-hour practical, which may be split into 2 1-hour sessions
  • 2 hours working on the ongoing project
  • 4 hours of work on exercises for practicals, quizzes, and/or test preparation

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including labs to receive credit for components of the course.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including labs will be available as recordings, but do not fully replicate the in-person experience.

The course will not include live online events.

Attendance on campus is required for the test and exam.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

The exam must be 50%, as well as attaining 50% in the project and 50% overall.

Student Feedback, Support and Charter

Student Feedback

Feedback on taught courses is gathered from students at the end of each semester through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions. Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students. In addition, class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Additional Information on Student Feedback

Students asked to have an exam covering the whole course, rather than two tests. This will allow students who do poorly on the test to still receive a passing grade if they demonstrate mastery on the exam. There were also concerns around academic integrity, which we will address with either paper and pencil test or full video invigilation.
