This course covers a number of movements in feminist legal jurisprudence: Liberal feminism, radical feminism, cultural feminism, intersectional feminism, mana wahine and post-modern feminism. We will discuss the central insights offered by each body of thought and practice, noting that there is a question mark as to whether some of these are “movements” or “feminist”.
Interspersed between discussing the vision of equality/equity that these "movements" express we will discuss a range of specific issues relevant to women in the legal context – for example, women’s experiences of the legal profession, combining work and motherhood, equal pay, the prosecution of sexual violence, women’s experiences of the family court, social security law, child protection, family violence and issues pertaining to transgender rights.
