Attendance is expected at lectures, however lectures will be available as recordings. The course may include optional live online events including group discussions. Attendance on campus is not required for any of the assessments. The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Taught courses use a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas to provide students with learning materials including reading lists and lecture recordings (where available). Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

The recommended textbook is Jayden Houghton Tikanga Māori: Cases and Materials (Thomson Reuters, Wellington, 2024). Resources will be available on Canvas. A casebook may be available for download.

Students may be asked to submit assessments digitally. The University reserves the right to conduct scheduled tests and examinations online or through the use of computers or other electronic devices. Where tests or examinations are conducted online remote invigilation arrangements may be used. In exceptional circumstances changes to elements of this course may be necessary at short notice. Students enrolled in this course will be informed of any such changes and the reasons for them, as soon as possible, through Canvas.

Oral Communication Assessment (50%)

About halfway through the semester, you will book in for a conversation with the teacher where you will be asked some questions about the course content. It will be "open book" meaning you will be able to bring in notes if you wish.

Written Communication Assessment (50%)

Near the end of the semester, you will be given a problem involving Māori land issues and asked to advise a client.

Feedback on taught courses is gathered from students at the end of each semester through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions. Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students. In addition, class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

LAWPUBL 427 Māori Land Law was recently offered in 2019, 2021 and 2023. 

In the 2019 SET evaluations, 94% of students agreed with the statement "Overall, I was satisfied with the quality of this course". No students disagreed. The mean scores for the course and the lecturers were well above the Faculty and University means.
