Māori 130/130G is an introduction to the Māori world. It is taught in the English language using some Māori language terms that you will learn during the course. It is suitable for students from a range of disciplines and backgrounds, from absolute beginners to those with extensive knowledge.
This course presents a Māori view of how we see the world, offering insights into topics that are often discussed and sometimes controversial, and that continue to shape contemporary life in New Zealand. These include aspects of world view and cosmology, customs and values, mātauranga Māori (Māori epistemology), the Māori language, Kapa Haka (performing arts), He Whakaputanga 1835 and Te Tiriti o Waitangi 1840, colonisation, Māori struggles for justice to the present day, treaty claims settlements, health, political independence and incarceration.
