In this course, we will explore what mathematical thinking and learning mean within mathematics education research, and how these ideas connect to practical issues of mathematics teaching and learning. To do so, we will examine the development of key learning theories and consider theoretical frameworks that offer lenses for understanding what it means to learn mathematics and how students can be supported in this process.
Students may wish to take this course if they are interested in:
- Critically examining theoretical perspectives that inform research in mathematics education
- Deepening their understanding of what it means to learn mathematics from different theoretical perspectives
- Exploring how theoretical conceptions of learning shape approaches to mathematics teaching
- Developing their ability to communicate ideas both orally and in writing
This course can be taken as part of an MProfStuds (Mathematics Education), PGDipSci, BSc(Hons), or as preparatory work for doctoral research.
The skills developed in this course are particularly useful for those wishing to pursue or further a career in mathematics teaching or mathematics education research.
