This course discusses films from different historical periods and locations to explore the art and significance of cinema.
We try to answer the following questions:
- What is cinema?
- How do films articulate meanings and generate experiences?
- How are films related to the wider world?
- How do we study films?
We seek to understand the industries, institutions and practices of world cinema.
We analyse how the medium of film and the elements of film form contribute to the aesthetics, meanings and experiences of films.
We examine the conventions of some film genres.
We use films to think about issues of culture, society, politics and economy.
We introduce students to some of the influential ideas, approaches and methods in the study of film, cinema and screen media.
We discuss the roles and processes in film and screen production.
