Music is not only aural but visual, and often accompanied with moving images. The course explores the myriad relationships between popular music and media such as film, television, and video. We examine audiovisual forms and techniques in texts such as music documentaries, biopics, TV performances, feature films, TV series and music videos. We analyse the presence of musicians, fans, songs, music genres and dance on screen. We contextualise music on screens in media industries and debates about popular culture and power relations. The course engages with a combination of theories, methods and approaches in media studies, communication, film studies, television studies, cultural studies, popular music studies, sound studies, performance studies and dance studies. Students have the opportunity to research and write about relevant topics of their choice, and are not expected to have specialised or technical knowledge of music to take this course.
