The study of pedagogy theory and practice applicable to the studio or school context. A range of topics is explored including instrumental technique, repertoire, health and well-being and pedagogical methods.

Course Overview

This course aims to provide performance students with the necessary skills for knowledge transfer in the studio environment. This is a flexible learning context that is site and genre specific. The music studio site is defined as one-to-one teaching but can include teaching into the associated music ensembles. The research and practice adapts to the needs of the genre. Students will research instrumental technique and repertoire through contemporary and iconic literature in studio pedagogy as relevant to their musical genre and studio practice. The course is designed to facilitate the transition of performance students into community music education through critical self-awareness, observation of studio and class teaching and supervised teaching experiences.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30 point course and students are expected to spend 20 hours per week involved in each 30 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect a minimum of 18 hours of supervision; 24 hours performance class or ensemble attendance; 150 hours of research, personal practice and video analysis and observations of teaching and rehearsals; and 108 hours of preparation of the final portfolio and presentation.

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including tutorials/studios to receive credit for components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials/studios] will not be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events.
Attendance on campus is required for the exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Teaching and Learning Methods

This is a supervised research course with practical components as defined by the studio site and genre. The balance of practical and written supervision is discussed and co-constructed between the supervisor and student before the semester begins. It may include mandatory participation in performance class and/or ensembles as determined and scheduled by the performance unit. Supervision meetings are scheduled independently between the supervisor and student.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Learning Continuity

In the event of an unexpected disruption, we undertake to maintain the continuity and standard of teaching and learning in all your courses throughout the year. If there are unexpected disruptions the University has contingency plans to ensure that access to your course continues and course assessment continues to meet the principles of the University’s assessment policy. Some adjustments may need to be made in emergencies. You will be kept fully informed by your course co-ordinator/director, and if disruption occurs you should refer to the university website for information about how to proceed.

Academic Integrity

The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced. In this course students may be asked to submit coursework assessments digitally. The University reserves the right to conduct scheduled tests and examinations for this course online or through the use of computers or other electronic devices. Where tests or examinations are conducted online remote invigilation arrangements may be used. In exceptional circumstances changes to elements of this course may be necessary at short notice. Students enrolled in this course will be informed of any such changes and the reasons for them, as soon as possible, through Canvas.

Assignments are to be submitted, according to submission type specified on Canvas, by the due date. In the event of illness or other circumstances that prevent completing an assignment, please contact the course coordinator with evidence as appropriate before the due date. Late assignments that do not have an approved extension will be penalized 10% for each day or part thereof. No assignment will be accepted after that assignment has been returned to students.

Student Feedback, Support and Charter

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions. Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.
