In this course, students are encouraged to develop their sociological imagination by applying sociological concepts to real-world issues in Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond. These issues include key sociological concerns such as identity, class, inequality, gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, migration, multiculturalism, and colonisation. They will be examined through the lens of a locally distinctive and globally relevant theme. Through this guiding theme, students will use sociological thinking to connect personal experiences to broader social, cultural, political and economic phenomena, with a particular focus on Aotearoa New Zealand. Emphasis is placed on developing the capacity to apply sociological perspectives to real-world situations, encouraging critical reflection and informed engagement with the complexities of social life at a local and global level.
