Subject Overview

Criminology is concerned not just with crime, but with the broader issues of social control and deviance and how these affect punishment and criminal justice.
You can study topics such as restorative justice, cybercrime, penology, gender, policing, prisons, cultural criminology, justice policies and Indigenous perspectives.

Knowledge and Skills

You can investigate the social, economic, cultural, political and legal determinants of criminality. You can also examine attempts to control crime both locally and internationally.

Potential Careers

A background in Criminology can open up career opportunities in social policy and criminal justice. You can develop analytical and research skills that will also be useful in many other careers.
Criminology considers various perspectives and responses in criminology and criminal justice both within New Zealand and internationally.

Plan Schedules

Complete 120 points comprising:

  • 45 points for Bachelor of Arts major in Criminology Stage III Courses, and
  • At least 15 points from Additional Courses from the Bachelor of Arts major in Criminology, and
  • 0 to 60 points from Courses from the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Schedules

Selected courses must include at least 75 points at level 300 or higher.

Bachelor of Arts major in Criminology Stage III Courses

Complete 45 points comprising:

  • 15 points for all Compulsory Course, and
  • 30 points from Elective Courses
