Subject Overview

Early Childhood Education plays a critical role in young children’s learning and exploration of the world. Studying Early Childhood Education (ECE) with us means that you will be taught by outstanding academics and teaching professionals who have the latest knowledge of early childhood research and practice.
You will gain deep knowledge through a range of practical experiences in early childhood centres supported by leading practitioners. Programmes include the integration of Māori and Pacific concepts, values, and knowledges, reflecting our unique place in the South Pacific.

Knowledge and Skills

Early childhood is a growth area – and one where highly qualified people are souight to progress a range of early childhood services, be they early childhood centres or related services for tamariki and their whanau. The complexities of these services require people with knowledge of and capability in complex and diverse contexts.

In this specialisation, you’ll develop advanced knowledge and capability in a range of fields, including psychology, leadership, child development, pedagogy, and contemporary global understandings of childhood. You’ll also progress your inquiry and research skills with the opportunity to complete a thesis if you choose this pathway.

Potential Careers

While many graduates go on to teach in early childhood settings in New Zealand or overseas, the programme will also provide you with transferable skills that can be applied to a range of careers. By already holding a bachelors degree you will be eligible to start on a higher step of the salary scale in services covered by the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) teaching collective agreement for early childhood teachers.
