Subject Overview

You can take courses in reading, writing and thinking about texts written in English, from the classics of English and American literature to exciting imaginative writing across the world today.
You can develop sophisticated reading and writing skills and gain an in-depth knowledge of cultural history. You can also take courses that develop your own creative writing skills and interests.

Knowledge and Skills

You can study texts from all over the English-speaking world, and literature from the medieval period up to the present. You can examine the roles texts have played in different cultures and at different periods. You can consider the different ways readers have approached texts, and how gender, race and other aspects of our identities have influenced writers and readers.

You will pay close attention to how texts achieve their effects and develop your skills in critical thinking. There are also opportunities to develop your own writing practice, including creative writing.

Potential Careers

English provides excellent training in critical thinking, analytical skills and in organising and expressing your ideas.
Our graduates have careers in the arts, business, communications, local and national government, publishing, teaching and libraries.

Plan Schedules

Complete 120 points comprising:

  • 45 points from Bachelor of Arts major in English Stage III Courses, and
  • At least 15 points from Additional Courses from the Bachelor of Arts major in English, and
  • 0 to 60 points from Courses from the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Schedules

Selected courses must include at least 75 points at level 300 or higher.
