Subject Overview

German is the native language of more than 100 million people. It is an important language of trade since Germany is the fourth-largest economy and the third-largest exporter in the world. Germany is also New Zealand’s most important trading partner in the European Union.
German language and linguistics courses can give you in-depth understanding and communication skills in the most widely spoken language in the European Union.

Potential Careers

Knowing German can open the door to becoming a diplomat and working in international affairs and business. Have you ever considered contributing to a sustainable world by working with German engineers in one of the leading countries in green technologies? What about working for one of over 100 German companies in New Zealand? With a major in German, you could educate others about opportunities with German by teaching, informing, consulting, or offering personal translation services.
