Subject Overview

German is the native language of more than 100 million people. It is an important language of trade since Germany is the fourth-largest economy and the third-largest exporter in the world. Germany is also New Zealand’s most important trading partner in the European Union.
German language and linguistics courses can give you in-depth understanding and communication skills in the most widely spoken language in the European Union.

Knowledge and Skills

As well as learning the language, you can study German film, literature and cultural history from the late eighteenth century to the present. As well as developing competence in the language, you can also gain a broad knowledge of the works of major writers and insight into key literary and cultural developments.

We offer additional opportunities for you to enhance your German skills. You may be able to participate in German international language examinations, or study abroad at universities or language institutes in Germany..

Potential Careers

Knowing German can open the door to becoming a diplomat and working in international affairs and business. Have you ever considered contributing to a sustainable world by working with German engineers in one of the leading countries in green technologies? What about working for one of over 100 German companies in New Zealand? With a major in German, you could educate others about opportunities with German by teaching, informing, consulting, or offering personal translation services. You could also work in the tourism sector in Aotearoa, where German speakers are one of the top three groups of international tourists.

Complete 120 points comprising:

  • 45 points for Bachelor of Arts major in German Stage III Courses, and
  • At least 15 points from Additional Courses from the Bachelor of Arts major in German, and
  • 0 to 60 points from Courses from the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Schedules

Selected courses must include at least 75 points at level 300 or higher.

  • 15 points for all Compulsory Course, and
  • 30 points from Elective Courses

Complete at least 15 points from the following:

A student must complete at most 30 points of courses matching the pattern COMPLIT 2**, COMPLIT 3**, EUROPEAN 2**, and EUROPEAN 3**.
