Subject Overview

You can choose from different aspects of Māori Studies to suit your interests and career goals. Study opportunities include Māori language, Māori and the media, material culture, history, development, politics, and Māori performing arts (kapa haka).

Knowledge and Skills

As a postgraduate student you can study Māori language and literature, material culture, society and culture, politics, media and Māori development.
Māori Studies staff have an exceptional record of research and publication. You will benefit from that legacy in our research-based teaching programmes and can contribute to it by your own work.
Our students and staff actively contribute to Māori development by advancing Māori knowledge. We have a strong commitment to serving Māori communities.

Potential Careers

Māori Studies can prepare you for a career in teaching, translation, research, media, iwi development, central and local government. You could work as an iwi adviser or administrator, consultant or policy analyst.

Prerequisite: A major in Māori Studies, or an equivalent subject approved by the Academic Head or nominee

Plan Schedules

Complete 120 points comprising:

  • At least 90 points from Courses from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) major in Māori Studies, and
  • 0 to 30 points from Courses from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Schedule, and
  • 0 to 30 points from UOFAK - University of Auckland Other Courses

Selected courses must include exactly 120 points at level 700.
