Subject Overview

The study of Medical Physics and Imaging Technology provides a very complex toolkit to support your ability to work in the biomedical industries, engage in the medical physics training or pursue a research career in biomedical optics.
You will study Medical Science courses that examine the ways in which host immune mechanisms control infection, advanced biomedical imaging studies of concepts related to the biology of cancer, and Physics courses that explore filtering and digital signal processing and advanced electromagnetism.

Knowledge and Skills

This programme involves extensive specialist training in imaging and physiology that may create a pathway to proceed to further postgraduate study in Medical Physics, Biophotonics, Biomedical Imaging or Biophysics.

Areas of research interests open to exploration include:

  • Theory of light matter interactions relevant to biological systems
  • Development of optical sensing and imaging systems
  • Data and image processing
  • Development of instrumentation and optical probes

Students considering the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Medical Physics and Imaging Technology programme should have a strong background in Physics and Mathematics. Courses in Biological Sciences or Physiology are also a good combination to have to provide a good foundation to progress your postgraduate studies in Medical Physics and Imaging Technology.

Potential Careers

Companies such as the Auckland District Health Board, Cubic Health and Orion Health require medical physicists with the specific skill-set required in biophotonic, biomedical imaging and instrumentation.

Jobs related to Medical Physics and Imaging Technology include:

  • Health analyst
  • Medical Physicist
  • Researcher
  • Scientific advisor
