Subject Overview

Philosophy is a subject that has been around for thousands of years and continues to shape the way we understand the world. It is the study of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason, the mind, and language. Philosophy is concerned with the analysis and evaluation of arguments, and with the development of logical reasoning and critical thinking skills.

Students have the opportunity to explore a wide range of topics and perspectives, from ancient and medieval philosophy to contemporary issues in ethics, epistemology, and the philosophy of science. Students will learn how to construct and evaluate arguments, analyse and critique philosophical texts, and engage in informed and respectful discussions with others.

By taking Philosophy courses, students will develop a range of valuable skills, including critical thinking, clear and effective communication, and the ability to analyse complex ideas. They will also gain a deeper understanding of the world and their place within it, as well as a greater appreciation for the diversity of human thought and experience.

Knowledge and Skills

As part of a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Philosophy you can study historical and contemporary debate on philosophical problems and explore those problems yourself.
The study of historical traditions in philosophy provides the foundation for today's philosophical inquiry. You can study many different areas and styles of philosophy, from Plato to Buddhist philosophy.

- The nature and limits of knowledge (epistemology)
- Morality (ethics)
- What makes a good society (social and political philosophy)

You can take a major in Philosophy as one of your two BA majors (a double major).
You will need to pass at least 120 points (eight courses) towards each of your majors, including at least 45 points (three courses) at Stage III.
