Introduction to Majors

A major is the main subject area that you choose to study in your degree. You will study courses up to Stage III level in this subject.

As well as gaining skills, knowledge and experience in your chosen area, you will learn how to think creatively, solve problems and communicate effectively, all essential skills to help you thrive in any career you choose.

Please see the main programme link below to see further details for the programme.

Subject Overview

You have many options available to you within a BSc Physics major. You can choose to keep your Physics major general, or you can choose to follow one of two Physics pathways, in order to focus your studies further:
- Medical Physics and Imaging Technology: The science of biomedical optics, biophotonics and medical physics. Students on this pathway will gain specialist training in the use of optical and laser technologies for biomedical studies, with applications in sensing, medicine and modelling.
- Photonics: The science and technology of light. Students on this pathway will gain specialist training in photonic and electronic engineering, advanced physics and mathematical electronics.

The study of Medical Physics and Imaging Technology provides a very complex toolkit to support your ability to work in the biomedical industries, engage in the medical physics training or pursue a research career in biomedical optics.
You will study Medical Science courses that examine the ways in which host immune mechanisms control infection, advanced biomedical imaging studies of concepts related to the biology of cancer, and Physics courses that explore filtering and digital signal processing and advanced electromagnetism.

Potential Careers

There is a real need in the biomedical industries for graduates who are proficient in the complementary areas of physics, biology and physiology, and skilled in the design and application of Imaging Technologies.

Jobs related to Medical Physics and Imaging Technology include:
- Health analyst
- Medical Physicist
- Researcher
- Scientific advisor
