Programme Overview

Develop advanced knowledge, skills, and awareness to critically reflect on effective supervision within your work context. The programme is designed for working professionals with at least three years’ experience in their field of practice. You will have the opportunity to learn and reflect alongside course colleagues from a broad range of social care and allied health professions to enhance your clinical and professional supervision skills.

Professional supervision is a significant cornerstone to learning, critical reflection and transformative practice. Throughout the programme you will examine the role of professional supervision, critically analysing and integrating theoretical perspectives, contemporary literature, policy and practice. You will grow your knowledge, skills and confidence in supervision within your own professional and organisational context.

Programme Structure

This 180-point taught programme is delivered through face-to-face block courses at the City Campus as well as online courses. It comprises three 30-point core courses and three 30-point elective courses.

Potential Careers

Master of Professional Supervision Practice graduates will have mastery of theories, models, skills and interventions in professional supervision, as well as advanced specialist knowledge of the field. They will have a demonstrated ability to apply specialist knowledge to practice in diverse clinical and cultural settings in sustaining ways.

You must have completed a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. Relevant subjects include health, counselling, education or social and human services.

You will need a GPA of 5.0 or higher for your Bachelor’s degree.

You must have at least three years of relevant professional experience and be currently employed or volunteering in a relevant professional context. Relevant contexts may include health, counselling, education, social or human services.

Other Pathways to Study

If you do not meet the entry requirements, you can still gain entry by passing 60 points in the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Supervision from this University or passing 60 points in the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Supervision from this University with a grade point average of 5.0 or higher, provided that the postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma has not been awarded.

Students who have passed courses towards the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Supervision or Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Supervision from this University may be able to reassign those courses to this degree provided that the postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma has not been awarded.

Regulations

Preamble

The regulations for this degree are to be read in conjunction with all other relevant statutes and regulations including the Academic Statutes and Regulations.

Admission

1 In order to be admitted to this degree, an applicant must have:

a (i) completed the requirements for a relevant Bachelors degree from this University with a Grade Point Average of 5.0 or higher, or have equivalent prior study

or

(ii) passed 60 points in the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Supervision or Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Supervision from this University with a Grade Point Average of 5.0 or higher, provided that the postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma has not been awarded

and

b at least three years’ relevant professional experience.

2 An applicant must be currently engaged (i.e., employed or volunteering) in counselling, education, health, social or human services, or another appropriate professional context.

3 Equivalence and relevance in Regulation 1 and 2 will be determined by the University. Equivalence pertains to the standard as well as nature and level of study.

4 In exceptional circumstances the requirements in Regulation 1 or 2 may be waived by the relevant Associate Dean Academic or nominee if they determine that an applicant has at least three years of relevant practical, professional or scholarly experience that provides an equivalent level of preparation.

Note: A relevant degree may be in counselling, education, health, or social and human services

Duration and Total Points Value

5 A student admitted to this degree must:

a pass courses with a total value of 180 points

and

b complete within the time limit specified in the General Regulations – Masters Degrees

and

c not exceed 220 points for the total enrolment for this degree.

Structure and Content

6 A student enrolled for this degree must complete the requirements as listed in the Master of Professional Supervision Practice Schedule.

7 A student must achieve a Grade Point Average of 5.0 or higher in the first 60 points of taught courses taken for this degree. If this Grade Point Average is not achieved, enrolment in the Master of Professional Supervision Practice cannot continue.

8 A student must complete the University of Auckland Academic Integrity course as specified in the Enrolment and Programme Regulations, Academic Integrity, of the University Calendar.

Credit, Cross-credit and Reassignment

9 A student may apply to reassign courses passed for this degree to the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Supervision or Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Supervision.

Transfer from Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma

10 A student who has passed courses towards the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Supervision or Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Supervision may apply to reassign those courses to this degree provided that the postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma has not been awarded.

Distinction

11 This degree may be awarded with Distinction or Merit as specified in the General Regulations – Masters Degrees.

Variations

12 In exceptional circumstances the Programme Director may approve a variation to a student’s programme of study in accordance with the Enrolment and Programme Regulations.

Regulation Commencement or Amendment

13 These regulations and/or schedule have been amended with effect from 1 January 2025.
