Programme Overview

The Postgraduate Certificate in Data Science (PGCertDataSci) is a short, intensive, part-time programme that provides graduates with a foundation for mastering data science, including fundamental skills for algorithm development, data management, and predictive modelling.

This qualification is ideally suited for those who have completed an undergraduate degree in either Computer Science or Statistics and wish to advance their career and knowledge in the Data Science field.

The PGCertDataSci is unique in that it also provides an alternative pathway into the Master of Data Science. If you wish to develop your Data Science career and skills, this programme is for you!

Programme Structure

The PGCertDataSci aims to meet the growing global demand for data scientists by offering you a part-time but intensive data science qualification on your previous undergraduate qualification in either Statistics or Computer Science. This postgraduate certificate also provides you with an alternative pathway into the Master of Data Science.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Data Science is a 60-point programme consisting of two 30-points courses. Each course runs over a 12-week Semester, enabling you to complete this programme one course at a time in as little as two semesters.

Other Pathways to Study

A Bachelor of Science with a major in Computer Science or Statistics from this University or an equivalent qualification with a GPA of 4.0 or higher in 60 points above Stage II.

This postgraduate certificate also provides you with an alternative pathway into the MDataSci - Master of Data Science.

Regulations

Preamble

The regulations for this postgraduate certificate are to be read in conjunction with all other relevant statutes and regulations including the Academic Statutes and Regulations.

Admission

1 In order to be admitted to this postgraduate certificate, an applicant must have:

a (i) completed the requirements for the Bachelor of Science from this University with a Grade Point Average of 4.0 or higher, and a major in Computer Science or Statistics, or have equivalent prior study

or

(ii) completed the requirements for the Bachelor of Science from this University with a Grade Point Average of 4.0 or higher in 60 points above Stage II, and a major in Computer Science or Statistics

and

b passed COMPSCI 130, MATHS 108 and STATS 101, or equivalent courses.

2 Equivalence in Regulation 1 will be determined by the University. Equivalence pertains to the standard as well as nature and level of study.

3 In exceptional circumstances, the requirement in Regulation 1 may be waived by the relevant Associate Dean Academic or nominee if they determine that an applicant has at least three years of relevant practical, professional or scholarly experience that provides an equivalent level of preparation.

Duration and Total Points Value

4 A student enrolled for this postgraduate certificate must:

a pass courses with a total value of 60 points

and

b complete within the time limit specified in the General Regulations – Postgraduate Certificates.

5 The total enrolment for this postgraduate certificate must not exceed 90 points.

Structure and Content

6 A student enrolled for this postgraduate certificate must complete the requirements as listed in the Postgraduate Certificate in Data Science Schedule.

7 A student must complete the University of Auckland Academic Integrity course as specified in the Enrolment and Programme Regulations, Academic Integrity, of the University Calendar.

Variations

8 In exceptional circumstances the Programme Director may approve a variation to a student’s programme of study in accordance with the Enrolment and Programme Regulations.

9 These regulations and/or schedule have been amended with effect from 1 January 2025.

A student must complete requirements for Bachelor of Science with a grade point average 4.0 or higher with a major in Computer Science or Statistics or equivalent prior study OR Bachelor of Science from UOA with average 4.0GPA above Stage II major in Computer Science or Statistics AND passed COMPSCI 130, MATHS 108 and STATS 101 or equivalent courses.
