A BMus/LLB(Hons) conjoint allows you to complete a BMus and the LLB(Hons) in less time, and with fewer points, than it would take to complete the two degrees separately.

As well as advancing your musical expertise and knowledge, the BMus/LLB(Hons) promotes creative and independent thinking, which are sought-after qualities in any industry.

The entertainment industry has unique legal and management opportunities which require specialised knowledge. The legal knowledge you will gain will be invaluable as a business manager in the music, film or entertainment industry, or you may choose to focus on a professional legal career.

You will be learning from leading academics, artists and researchers and have access to fully equipped music facilities.

Studying Music and Law opens up opportunities as a professional musician or singer, within broadcasting, film, media, social research, entertainment law, and arts and cultural management.

New Zealand qualifications

Entry is by invitation for high-achieving Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Laws (BMus/LLB) Part II students.

To be considered for the Honours programme in Law, you must achieve a B+ average or higher across all your law courses at the completion of LLB Part II during your BMus/LLB. (This is usually at the end of your third year.)

Depending on the type of programme you are pursuing, you may have the opportunity to complete a unique research project. To find out more about the research carried out at the University of Auckland and to identify potential supervisors, check out our researcher profiles.

You could be eligible for another programme, or check out these alternative pathways:

See if you meet the criteria for the Undergraduate Targeted Admission Scheme (UTAS).
Bridge your educational gap with a preparation and foundation programme.
If you are under 20, have no formal University Entrance (UE) qualification, and are a New Zealand or Australian citizen or permanent resident you can apply for discretionary entrance.
If you can demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and maturity, we offer admission to applicants under 16.

Fees are set in advance of each calendar year and will be updated on this website. Fees are inclusive of 15% GST, but do not include the Student Services Fee, course books, travel and health insurance, or living costs. See important dates for the academic year, including orientation, enrolment, study breaks, exams, and graduation.

A student who is required to meet the Academic English Language Requirement through the completion of an approved academic English language course, as specified in the Enrolment and Programme Regulations, Academic English Language Requirement, of the University Calendar, may be required by the LLB(Hons) Programme Director to:

1 substitute an LLB(Hons) course with an approved academic English language course, or

2 include an approved academic English language course in their non-LLB(Hons) component degree, or

3 complete, to a specified standard, a course or courses that are approved by the Programme Director as meeting the Academic English Language Requirement for that student.

Complete 735 points comprising:

255 points for one Specialisation from Bachelor of Music Conjoint Component, and
465 points for Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Conjoint Component, and
15 points from General Education, and
1 item from Academic Integrity Course
