Programme Overview

New Zealand is recognised as a global leader in innovative project management approaches, delivering world-class projects across all engineering disciplines. Develop your skills and credentials as a professional project manager, able to lead and direct multi-disciplinary engineering projects.

This programme provides students with the in-depth knowledge and skills needed to succeed in project management in a variety of industries. Focusing on two key project management practices, Waterfall and Agile, this programme enables students to work towards industry-recognised professional certification.

Students will gain sound fundamentals in project management concepts and application, whilst completing a spectrum of elective courses that broaden acquisition of knowledge and skills within the engineering project management specialisation.

A project towards the end of your programme enables you to apply your theoretical skills to real-world industry projects, and consolidates your learning.

The New Zealand Ministry of Health needs your leadership to successfully implement critical health projects. The Auckland District Health Board will provide four University of Auckland students with paid internships while they study for a Master of Engineering Project Management, Health Projects specialisation. The Master of Engineering Project Management (MEPM) is globally accredited by the Global Accreditation Centre for Project Management Education Programs (GAC), of the Project Management Institute (PMI).

This is the first and currently the only PMI accredited program in New Zealand.

Programme Structure

This programme offers two options to suit candidates' existing qualifications and experience.

• 120 points for candidates with a four-year bachelor's (honours) degree

• 180 points for candidates with a three-year bachelor's degree

You will complete four 15-point core courses and either two 15-point electives for the 120-point programme or six 15-point electives for the 180-point programme. You will also complete a 30-point project for both programmes, consolidating your learning and allowing you to apply your skills in a real-world setting.

Note:

  • This programme is delivered in both on-campus and Auckland Online (100% online delivery) options. However, please note not all courses are delivered across both the delivery modes. Please refer to the ‘Delivery mode’ section course outlines.
  • Are you an international applicant considering applying for a student visa and post-study work rights after completing your master's? In that case, be aware that international students must be enrolled in at least 45 points (three courses) in an on-campus delivery mode each consecutive semester to comply with student visa requirements.
  • Online courses do not meet the Immigration NZ requirements for on-campus study.
  •  Masters students must complete a minimum of 30 weeks of on-campus study full-time to be eligible to apply for a post-study work visa.

  • a BE or BE(Hons) from this University with a GPA of 4.0 in 60 points about Stage III.
  • a relevant postgraduate diploma from this University with a GPA of 4.0.
  • a relevant bachelors (Hons) degree from this University and passed 60 points towards a relevant postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma or graduate diploma from this University with a GPA of 4.0.

Taught 180 points

You must have completed one of the following:

  • a relevant bachelors degree from this University with a GPA of 4.0 in 60 points about Stage II.
  • a relevant bachelors degree from this University and passed 60 points towards a relevant postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma or graduate diploma from this University with a GPA of 4.0.

Relevant disciplines such as, applied science, architecture, commerce, construction, engineering, information technology, science or technology may be considered relevant.

Regulations

Preamble

The regulations for this degree are to be read in conjunction with all other relevant statutes and regulations including the Academic Statutes and Regulations.

Admission

1 In order to be admitted to this degree, an applicant intending to complete 120 points must have:

a completed the requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) from this University with a Grade Point Average of 4.0 or higher, or have equivalent prior study

or

b completed the requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) from this University with a Grade Point Average of 4.0 or higher in 60 points above Stage III

or

c completed the requirements for a relevant Bachelors Honours degree from this University with a Grade Point Average of 4.0 or higher, or have equivalent prior study

or

d completed the requirements for a relevant Bachelor Honours degree from this University with a Grade Point Average of 4.0 or higher in 60 points above Stage III

or

e completed the requirements for a relevant postgraduate diploma with a Grade Point Average of 4.0 from this University, or have equivalent prior study

or

f (i) completed the requirements for a relevant Bachelors Honours degree from this University, or have equivalent prior study

and

(ii) passed 60 points towards a relevant postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma or graduate diploma from this University with a Grade Point Average of 4.0 or higher.

2 In order to be admitted to this degree, an applicant intending to complete 180 points must have:

a completed the requirements for a relevant Bachelors degree from this University with a Grade Point Average of 4.0 or higher, or have equivalent prior study

or

b completed the requirements for a relevant Bachelors degree from this University with a Grade Point Average of 4.0 or higher in 60 points above Stage II

or

c (i) completed the requirements for a relevant Bachelors degree from this University, or have equivalent prior study

and

(ii) passed 60 points towards a relevant postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma or graduate diploma from this University with a Grade Point Average of 4.0 or higher.

3 In order to be admitted to this degree, an applicant must have at least two years of relevant professional experience approved by the Programme Director.

4 Equivalence and relevance in Regulations 1, 2 and 3 will be determined by the University. Equivalence pertains to the standard as well as nature and level of study.

5 a In exceptional circumstances the requirements in Regulations 1 and 4 may be waived by the Associate Dean Postgraduate Research or nominee if they determine that an applicant has a Bachelors degree and relevant practical, professional or scholarly experience of an appropriate kind that is equivalent to one year of postgraduate study.

b In exceptional circumstances the requirements in Regulations 2 and 4 may be waived by the Associate Dean Postgraduate Research or nominee if they determine that an applicant has at least three years of relevant practical, professional or scholarly experience that provides an equivalent level of preparation.

Notes:

(i) This is a limited entry programme as per the Limitation of Entry Statute 1991 and selection criteria apply. Selection criteria are available from the Faculty of Engineering and Design.

(ii) Whether a qualification is considered relevant will depend on the courses passed. Qualifications in in applied science, architecture, commerce, construction, engineering, information technology, science or technology may be considered relevant.

Duration and Total Points Value

6 An applicant admitted to this degree under Regulation 1 or 5a must:

a pass courses with a total value of 120 points

and

b complete within the time limit specified in the General Regulations – Masters Degrees

and

c not exceed 160 points for the total enrolment for this degree.

7 An applicant admitted to this degree under Regulation 2 or 5b must:

a pass courses with a total value of 180 points

and

b complete within the time limit specified in the General Regulations – Masters Degrees

and

c not exceed 220 points for the total enrolment for this degree.

Structure and Content

8 A student enrolled for this degree must complete the requirements as listed in the Master of Engineering Project Management Schedule, which may include the requirements for the specialisation listed.

9 A student who has previously passed any course the same as, or similar to, the courses required for this degree must substitute an alternative course as approved by the Programme Director or nominee.

10 A student who has to complete 180 points must achieve a Grade Point Average of 4.0 or higher in the first 60 points of taught courses taken for this degree. If this is not achieved, enrolment in the Master of Engineering Project Management cannot continue.

11 A student must complete the University of Auckland Academic Integrity course as specified in the Enrolment and Programme Regulations, Academic Integrity, of the University Calendar.

Research Component

12 a The research project is to be carried out under the guidance of a supervisor appointed by Academic Head.

b The research project topic must be approved by the Programme Director or nominee prior to enrolment.

c The research project is to be completed and submitted in accordance with the General Regulations – Masters Degrees.

Credit, Cross-credit and Reassignment

13 A student may apply to reassign courses passed for this degree to the Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering Project Management or Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering Project Management, providing this degree has not been awarded.

Transfer from Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma

14 A student who has passed courses towards a Graduate Diploma in Engineering Project Management or Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering Project Management or Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering Project Management that are available in this degree may apply to reassign those courses to this degree provided that the graduate diploma or postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma has not been awarded.

15 A student who has passed courses towards a Graduate Diploma in Engineering or Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering or Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering that are available in this degree may apply to reassign those courses to this degree provided the graduate diploma or postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma has not been awarded.

Distinction

16 This degree may be awarded with either Honours, Distinction or Merit in accordance with the General Regulations – Masters Degrees.

Variations

17 In exceptional circumstances the Programme Director may approve a variation to a student’s programme of study in accordance with the Enrolment and Programme Regulations.

18 These regulations and/or schedule have been amended with effect from 1 January 2025.
